First Shots & Vaccinations for Puppies

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting milestone, and one of the most important steps you can take early on is scheduling their first veterinary visit. At Salmon Creek Vet Clinic, we help new puppy parents understand when to begin vaccinations, which shots are necessary, and what to expect during their first appointment with a vet.

When Should Puppies Get Their First Shots?

Most puppies should receive their first set of vaccinations between 6 and 8 weeks of age. Even if your puppy appears healthy, early vaccines are critical for protecting them during a time when their immune system is still developing. This helps ensure a healthy pet that grows with you.

If your puppy was adopted from a breeder or rescue, they may have already received an initial vaccine. During your visit, our veterinarians will review any existing medical records and create a customized care plan using our comprehensive veterinary wellness and treatment services.

Why Early Vaccination Is Important

Puppies are born with some immunity passed from their mother, just like humans, but this protection fades quickly. Vaccinations help your puppy build safe, long-lasting immunity before they are exposed to serious illnesses.

  • Parvovirus
  • Distemper
  • Canine hepatitis
  • Upper respiratory infections

Core Vaccines Puppies Need

DHPP (Core Combination Vaccine)

The DHPP vaccine is one of the most important vaccines your puppy will receive. It protects against:

  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis (Adenovirus)
  • Parvovirus
  • Parainfluenza

Typical schedule:
First dose at 6–8 weeks, followed by boosters every 3–4 weeks until about 16 weeks of age.

Leptospirosis Vaccine

The leptospirosis vaccine protects against the Leptospira bacteria, which pets can contract from coming into contact with contaminated water from wildlife. Leptospirosis is a disease that can affect both pets and humans. Puppies receive two doses of the Leptospirosis vaccine, usually at 12 and 16 weeks of age.

Rabies Vaccine

The rabies vaccine is required by law and protects against a fatal disease that can affect both pets and humans. It is usually administered between 12 and 16 weeks of age.

Optional Vaccines Based on Lifestyle

Depending on your puppy’s lifestyle and exposure risk, additional vaccines may be recommended, including:

  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough) – ideal for puppies that come into contact with other dogs, especially those attending daycare, boarding, or training classes
  • Canine Influenza – helpful for social dogs or multi-pet households
